The money isn’t there and I have debts to pay off, otherwise I would... This would make 2 out of 3 of my goal of having a “Piech Collection” of VW branded cars.
I already have !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the other two goals of this collection would be the W12 Phaeton and a W8 Passat Wagon with a manual trans.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
.
It’s local enough to me, the price isn’t outrageous, and it probably won’t sell for awhile because the owner thinks it’s called a “Phantom” instead of a Phaeton. I found it by searching “W12" instead...
Alas, too many bills that need catching up on... some other year... damnit.

Only obvious solution: buy it so you can swap the engines on the cars. W12 Toua reg, V10 Diesel Phaeton.

I know that’s one of those cars I’ll regret not buying in 20 years, but at the same time the
Danger!
High Voltage!
reputation of aughties VW’s always convinces me to stay away.

I had the chance to buy a bucket list car 2 years ago and skipped because of not having any of that pesky money . I should have done it.
What could possibly go wrong?

I think aughties VWs are the best. It’s the new fangled shit as they got closer to 2010 and up that seems extra problematic.
Ah, who am I kidding? They all have issues. But there definitely is a feel to the early and mid 2000s cars that I like. The sheet metal is particularly thick on them compared to later cars and most competitors.
Though the soft touch interior stuff is atrocious as it ages. As a technician, I've grown to appreciate the logic behind their electrical systems and consistency with scan tool operation.

My gut tells me that if the author doesn’t even
know what his car is called
(and perhaps it was autocorrect, in which case, if the author d
oesn’t even have the common sense to double-check his own ad before posting), you might want to walk away because I wouldn’t think he’s done the maintenance properly...

Err...
“The sheet metal is particularly thick on them compared to later cars and most competitors.”
Then why do I (at least around here) see pretty much every fifth-gen early-mid 2000's Golf/Jetta with a crap-ton of rust compared to later and
earlier cars? A friend’s fifth-gen GTi for reference, and it was a relatively low-mile car in the grand scheme of things (I think when I took this pic it only had like 12
0,000kms?)

They were great looking cars with nice interiors. Everyone I knew had one, but they were always at the dealer - and it was always a fight to get them fixed. Who knew that faulty wiring was from excessive wear and tear? Oh that shift fork that means your 6 speed VW with 25,000 miles is now a 4 speed? Yeah I mean that’s clearly driver misuse.
They were probably OK once you were clear of the warranty, but by then their reputation was sealed.

That is A LOT of car for $5000.
First repair bill, sixth month in: also $5000.

Many of those issues eventually got updated parts to fix them once VW figured out, oh shit, yeah, we did kind of screw that design up!
It sucks buying new VW/Audi products. They are absolute assholes about warranty. But, I'm a technician. I only buy cars which have already been given up on, I then fix and drive them.

It’s probably telling that everyone I knew that had one back in the day now drives a Toyota. But yeah, if you can fix VWs and have the scan tools, I’m sure most of them are pretty sorted once the original owner dumps them at a fire sale price.

The mk5s were where the sheetmetal started to get thin. The Mk4s and B5.5 Passats feel WAY sturdier than Mk5, B6 and newer sheetmetal. The Touareg and Phaeton feel similar to the mk4 and B5.5s as far as metal sturdiness.
Though I will say, the chassis dynamics on mk5s are far and away superior to that of the Mk4.

Not if you fix em yourself ;)
Parts still aren’t cheap, but beyond that, it’s just my own time to fix it.
Bigger problem above all else is lack of storage space for a project vehicle at the moment.

Hope you get to make one yours eventually!
